The School Play

[Flashback Stories = stories that take place in Where Snow Doesn’t Fall BEFORE the 1st book begins.

They explore past events, characters, and moments that aren’t necessary to the main story, hence why it’s separate from the series and is free to read. Still, they contain canon events and easter eggs that add to the overall world and story.

Like everything else, these are subject to edits or changes over time.

That said, enjoy~!]

“Why do I have to be paper again?” Krow pouted, barely able to move around in his costume.

“Smile Krow,” Kyle placed his fingers on the corner of Krow’s lips, lifting his frown up, “you know, you’re lucky me and Eric don’t say anything.”

Krow huffed before smiling forcefully, making them laugh.

Eric hummed, “you have to be the paper because I’m the rock and Kyle’s the scissors.”

Today was the last day of fifth grade. It was also the day of all the school plays. And if them three wanted to win that bucket of SnackyCrunchies candy and chips, they needed to be 100% great at their role.

But with Krow pouting like this… Kyle might have to step up his game.

After all, Krow was quiet all year. Kyle only started talking to him these last few month; Krow didn’t seem to like that too much, for some reason.

It’s fine, Kyle will make him laugh eventually. But it doesn’t mean he wants to make him frown in the meantime.

So, with a cheeky, goodless grin, Kyle waddled over to Krow and stared at him intently.

“What-?” He huffed, only for Kyle to start tickling his belly.

“HAH- HhahaA- stop!!!” Krow cried with laughter, trying to run away, but Eric quickly caught him, holding his arms from behind.

“This-” Krow kept laughing, flailing around, “this is woe-woes!! I’m going to- hahaaHa- tell the teacher!!”

“You said the w-word~! You said the-” Kyle sang, only to get kneed in the chin.

He stumbled backwards and fell onto his butt.

Krow immediately stiffened, a guilty look crossing his face, but when he saw Kyle burst out laughing, he relaxed a little.

Then, he pouts again, saying, “see what you did! You made me do that!”

Eric laughed, loosening his hold before handing Krow a lollipop.

Krow held it suspiciously, asking, “what flavor is it?”

“Mystery,” Kyle states, “try it to find out.”

“I don’t trust you guys,” he retorted, trying to cross his arms, but he couldn’t thanks to the costume, “plus, I can’t even reach my mouth.”

“Well I can reach your mouth,” Eric grinned, getting close and personal.

Krow narrowed his eyes and leaned away, gritting his teeth.

“Is he trying to not smile?” Kyle wondered, gasping, “oh my gosh, Eric are you seeing this, he’s trying to not smile!!”

Eric covered his mouth, and funnily enough, Krow did too.

Well, at least he tried to.

“I’m not!” Krow defended, dropping his hands in annoyance, “I’m gonna tell the teacher on you!!”

“For what, for trying to get you to lift those lips up?” Kyle teased.

Krow huffed, “why are you always so mouthy?”

“I was born that way.”

“No,” Eric grinned, “his Mom is like that.”

Kyle gasped, laughing, “I’m gonna tell Mama you said that!”

“Noooo don’t,” he whined.

“ROCK PAPER SCISSORS, I repeat, ROCK PAPER SCISSORS to the stage!”

Krow shuddered, “I- I’m- uh, I don’t know anymore!”

Eric patted his back, “we got this broski-tato, you’re gonna be a star up there.”

“Or paper,” Kyle adds, making himself and Eric laugh. Krow however furrowed his brows, which he liked to do a lot around them because he knows he can just tell the teacher on them if they every try to tell on him first.

But if Kyle wasn’t seeing things wrong, it really did look like Krow smiled this time. He doesn’t comment on it, though, because he didn’t want to push it.

When they got onto the stage, Kyle looked for his Mom and Dad, and found them. Even Alfred came!!

He waved quickly, grinning in excitement to show them the performance he came up with. Although he can’t really say he saw how they reacted, thanks to the bright spotlight.

Their teacher, Mrs. Jenny, smiled as she gestured at the three, “feauturing Eric as rock, Krow as Paper, and Kyle as scissors, the performance is called Rock Paper Scissors!”

The audience applauded and cheered, making Kyle giggle. He looked around for Eric’s parents. He only knew how his Mom looked, or at least, she’s the only one he actually remembers.

Eric usually takes the bus though, like Krow, so that’s why.

But Krow…? Well he never said anything about his parents, and Kyle’s never seen them. That said, they’ve only been talking to Krow for some time now, which hasn’t been long enough to know everything yet. Like whether he likes pepper jack cheese or colby on his tacos.

Well, now that he thinks about it, Krow does have an Uncle. But Kyle’s only seen him a few times over the school year, usually in the morning though, during early morning recess before class starts.

If he’s here, Kyle wouldn’t know.

But Krow didn’t seem to care, so he got ready to perform.

Kyle cleared his throat, and then stood in front of the two, facing the audience as he spoke.

“As you may all know, rock paper scissors is a simple, simple game. Rock defeats scissors, scissors defeats paper, and paper defeats rock. That is how it goes. But what happens when all three of them are here?”

“Well,” Kyle smiled charmingly, “let’s find out.”

He ran back over to the two and shuffled in between them. Then he quickly whispers, “guys go back to the side-stage!” And they quickly ran behind the curtains.

Eric ran to the other side of the stage, leaving Kyle and Krow on the right side. Mrs. Jenny pulled up their props and desks before walking back down the stage.

“Okay Krow, remember the cue, it’s-”

“I know the cue!!” Krow huffed.

“Okayyyy,” Kyle grinned, “whatever you say.”

He held his fingers up to Eric, and on three, they both walked onto the stage like they owned the place.

Then-

“YOU,” Kyle pointed, smiling with narrowed eyes, “my rival!”

“Well this must be bonkers for you, broski-tato,” Eric smirked, “you can’t mess with me. Hah. Bet you’re really happy about that.”

“The happiest,” Kyle stuck his tongue out, “but guess what?”

“What?” Eric huffed.

“Chicken butt!” Kyle laughed, before grabbing a rock off his desk and turning it around.

He showed the audience what was on the thing. Googly eyes. Kyle couldn’t help but perk up when everyone started laughing.

Eric gasped, “what did you do to that beautiful rock?!”

Kyle chuckled, closing his eyes, “happy, right? I made a you that actually has fashion.”

“Oh I’m happy alright,” Eric gritted a smile, “because I’m still stronger than you.”

…

It was quiet for a moment.

Knew it. Krow forgot his cue.

Kyle turned around, already knowing how to improvise, “you may be stronger, I guess, but are you really?”

He made eye contact with said boy, who was just watching in entertainment.

Krow jumped, before his eyes widened, and then he quickly waddled onto stage, so Kyle quickly turned back around.

“I mean-” Kyle started, but Krow interrupted him.

“Hi.”

Krow stood between the two, purely facing the audience. He looked at Kyle, then Eric, and just stood there.

“Paper?!” Eric gasped again, “how can this be?!”

Krow grabbed a notebook from his desk, and lifted it up, “I’m paper, and I beat rock.”

Kyle grinned, though secretly wished they could sit in chairs because he was sweating his butt off right now. Nevertheless, he proclaims, “YES! I finally can win!”

Then, he grabs scissors off his desk, while Eric grabs his rock and takes the googly eyes off, and then Kyle cuts a single paper out of Krow’s notebook.

Krow gaped like he just witnessed ice cream fall on the floor, before running over to Eric, “if I keep you safe, will you get him for me?”

Eric hummed, pretending to think about it, before nodding, “yes!”

“No!” Kyle cried, “or- or-”

“Y’know what,” Krow held both his hands out, “no more fighting!”

“But fighting makes me happy!” Kyle states.

“Yeah!” Eric agrees.

“Okay then,” Krow shrugged, “fight!”

They both repositioned their desks, and then…

“One two three four, I declare a thumb war!”

…

..

.

To be very honest, at some point they forgot the rest of the script and were just playing around on stage, especially after Krow slipped and couldn’t get back up, so they had to both help him.

But as the timer began to get to the last minutes, they wrapped up their performance by saying in unison, “even IF we are all different, we are all good at something, so we should all be happy and play together!”

They slightly bowed (since it was hard to do so) and the audience cheered for them.

…

..

.

“Do you think we won?” Kyle wondered, itching to get out of his costume as they all stood backstage.

Eric nodded, “definitely.”

Krow shook his head, so they both looked at him. His face twisted, before he explained, “we’re lucky we all get candy for being here.”

They laughed at that, making him smile a little.

“Anddddd the winner is… Chicken Stars Strawberries!”

Kyle shook his fist, “I knew we should’ve brought chickens!!”

Since it was over, they skipped over to the other teacher and she gave them each SnackyCrunchies, candy and chocolate, for participation, before running to the dressing rooms.

Eric and Kyle were already thinking of what to do next, although a glance at Krow proved that maybe he wasn’t taking this lack of win as well as they are.

They spared each other a look.

“Krow,” Kyle got his attention, “wanna go to the playground?”

He perked up, nodding enthusiastically.

“Okay,” Eric grinned, “let’s play tag too!”
